Caraes Butare was created in 1978 by the Congregation of the Brothers of Charity, as a branch of Ndera Neuropsychiatric Teaching Hospital in order to provide and decentralize neuropsychiatric care to mental health patients living in the Southern and Western provinces.
The hospital works in collaboration with the Rwandan Government and benefits from the Government support. The Government provides, among others, qualified health human resources and Caraes provides supportive staff.

Mr. Gonzague KAYITARE
Head of CARAES Butare
Mr. Gonzague KAYITARE is a Mental Health Nurse at Ndera Neuropsychyiatric Teaching Hospital since 2006 and the Head of CARAES Butare since 2013. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health from Catholic University of Rwanda, and an Advanced Diploma in Mental Health Nursing from University of Rwanda. Prior to the current role, Mr. Kayitare worked in different departments of NPH CARAES Ndera.
Mr. Kayitare is also member of different committees at the hospital, namely; Drugs therapeutic Committee, Disciplinary Committee, Employee’s Health and Safety Committee, and Management Committee. From 2014 to date, he is Lecturer of Mental Health Nursing course at Ndera International Novitiate for Brothers of Charity (St John of God Community). He served as member of Fracarita Rwanda (NGO of Brothers of Charity). He was also Member of Board of Directors of Kabutare District Hospital, from 2016-2021.
